Singer of World and Folk
A.k.a. Wilhelmina Jacoba Viviers
Very popular and successful South African folk and gospel singer. Born in Johannesburg on 26 November 1934. Known mainly for her Afrikaans Folk songs of the 60's and 70's. Started off as a school teacher, but became a professional vocalist when she became successful due to songs such as 'Jy Is My Liefling' and 'Gee Haar 'n Roos' as well as her appearance in 3 movies. In 1975 she became a devout Christian and recorded mainly gospel music (in Afrikaans and English) after that with great success - attaining double platinum for a Gospel album. Recorded upwards of 40 albums and an estimated 500 songs in her career, some as duets with various South African male singers, most often with Lance James. Still (in the early 21 st century) active with occasional concerts and recordings.
