It’s been a never-ending winter. As the sun peeks out from the gray-clouded sky, the tune to accompany the sunshine is right here. A song to explode to, to shake your junk to, to go vaguely loopy to. The track is ‘Lover’s Lover’ by American-based Greek DJ Mossel and Nigerian singer, Niyola. Here, we have two beloved budding artists from countries of ancient cultures come together to integrate their musical heritage with a modern adventurous bent. The single also features exquisite percussion from Kunle Ade, the son of Nigerian legend, King Sunny Ade. Apart from being the right sound for summer weather, it is also a truly international track, made by acts from different continents released by key dance music labels from a plethora of territories. The influence of European house and African drumming, as well as the mania of US EDM can be clearly heard in ‘Lovers Lover’. It’s reasonable to say that the drop at 1:42 is unlikely to be bettered in 2018. This is euphoric pop, an ode to freedom following mistreatment in a relationship and the unpredictable possibilities ahead. Mossel began writing and performing before he had even hit his teens and, by 14, he was DJ’ing in Athens’ bars. Ever since then, he has played all over the world, spreading his take on dance music to an ever-increasing audience. Mossel was the first Greek DJ to appear at the Ultra Music Festival in Croatia – he headlined the Radio stage. Since then, he has toured India, played the Olympic Stadium in Greece and sold out arenas. Niyola was born in Lagos, Nigeria. Her debut single, ‘Toh Bad’ was released in 2013 and has followed that up with a series of releases. She has been nominated for several Nigerian Entertainment Awards, including ‘Best Female Artist’ and ‘Song Of The Year’. These are acts brought together by the creative capabilities of technology – a truly 21st century combination with a song that is perfect for 2018. Let’s hope that this summer we get the sunshine this song deserves.
