Where are you? There are no sign posts, no landmarks and no guides to point the way. There are no stars by which you can align your position and no sun nor moon in motion to offer any sense of direction. Even gravity has abandoned you here with neither "up" now "down" to right your footing. This is a place completely detached from any reality you have ever known. There is nothing familiar to your senses. No sights, sounds, tastes or smells to give you any clue. All you have is this alien, indescribable sound. It comes from nowhere and echoes off of surfaces unseen and unknown. Cling to it! It is all you have left! Recorded at Blood 'n' Tongue, Vancouver, BC, July 11 to 28, 2011. For this collection, the primary conceptual framework was based on the idea of avoiding anything that might indicate some form of recognizable structure or identity. Each piece has been carefully composed so as to avoid any indications of form or purpose. Sounds were selected and modified in order to ensure that they were as non-representative as possible. The idea was to create a soundscape which exists, as much as possible, in its own realm and reality and without any reference to external experiences or artifacts. Sounds may have vague characteristics which are reminiscent of some known entity, but they never resolve into any distinct form. They always remain nebulous and just out of reach. The effect of this may be alienating to some while others may find it a kind of escapism. Which interpretation you experience is dependant on your state of mind. There is no judgement on either reaction. It is only pointed out as a consideration for further exploration.
