Ernest "Mud" Werner was a surfer in Hawai'i who was called a "beach boy", or someone who local surfers respected and cherished. due to winning surfing championships in the late 50's and early 60's. After Hawai'i became the 50th state in 1959, he began writing songs on the side to make a living, along with teaching locals and tourists how to surf. Werner was associated with Don Ho, Sam Kapu, Kui Lee, Moe Keale, and Zulu, thus becoming Hawai'i's first generation of pop/lounge singers and musicians post-statehood.
