American politician (South Kingston, Rhode Island, April 3, 1741 – October 31, 1828). Upon hearing the news of the battle of Bunker Hill he wrote a ballad called “The American Hero”, urging the Americans to be prepared to die for their freedom. The poem was almost immediately set to music by Andrew Law.
