Obibini Takyi is a native of Asante Akyem Atwedie in the Ashanti region (Ghana). He was born to the lates Mr Solomon Kwadwo Baah and Madam Adwoa Boakyewaa from Dampong & Atwedie respectively. Obini first played with the Yamoah's Band and also joined Amakye Dede to form The Apollo Highkings in 1982 at Agogo. He later joined the Air Force band Sky Hawks in Takoradi in 1983. He left the shores of Ghana to Nigeria where he formed The Lakayama Band in 1985. He came back to Ghana to form The African Tops, before he left to Europe.
