Romanian poet and writer (in German, his mother tongue). b : November 23, 1920 in Cernăuţi, Ukraine d : April 20, 1970 in Paris Paul Celan was born into a Jewish family who were deported to a concentration camp in Ukraine while Paul was sent to a forced-labor camp in Moldavia. Two years after the war, Paul fled Romania, eventually settling in Paris. He married French artist Gisèle Lestrange. In 1970, he committed suicide, drowing himself in the Seine.
