Musician of Classical
The Pianist Paul Dan , born in Romania in 1944, began his musical education at the age of 14. His teachers Joseph Willer, Ella Philip, Georg Halmos and Florica Musicescu taught him a variety of European music traditions from Budapest, Paris, Vienna and Moscow. In Romania he studied at the conservatories in Cluj and Bucharest. At the age of 23, as a finalist of the International Bach Competition in Leipzig 1968 (Förderpreis), he became a scholarship holder of the DAAD and continued his studies with Hugo Steurer in Munich. He participated in numerous national and international competitions with great success and received various prizes and awards, including the "George Enescu Fellowship" (1966-1968) and the "Pfitzner Prize" in Munich in 1970.Already during his studies Paul Dan pursued a busy concert activity, he devoted himself in particular to chamber music (eg with the Residenzquintett München and the wind ensemble of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks) and contemporary music (collaboration with "musica viva", "Musik our time "and the" Studio for New Music "). He has performed all over Europe, North and South America, Africa, East Asia (Japan, Taiwan), South Asia (Thailand, India) and the Middle East. He has performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras including the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Stuttgart Symphony Orchestra, the Nationaltheater Mannheim, the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, the New Japan Philharmonics, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and the Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra under the baton of Bruno Weil, Wolf Dieter Hauschild, Wolfgang Rennert, Jan Koetsier, Hubert Soudant, Sergio Sossi, Gabor Ötvös, Kurt Wöss, Tadaaki Odaka and Kazuo Yamada. His chamber music partners included the violinists Shmuel Ashkenasi, Ulf Hoelscher, Wanda Wilkomirska, the violist Enrique Santiago, the cellists Daniel Grosgurin and Angelika May, the tenor Aldo Baldin, the Vermeer Quartet, the Tokyo International Chamber Group and the Aurin Quartet. For almost all German broadcasters, as well as ORF Vienna, ORF Innsbruck, Radio France, NHK Tokyo, BBC London, the broadcasters Basel and Zurich, etc., Paul Dan made recordings. He has recorded records at Toshiba's "EMI" Records in Tokyo, CBS's "Ondine" London, Aulos Connaisseur and Ambitus. His particular interest is in addition to the standard repertoire especially of contemporary music with primal and first performances of z. Ernst Khenek, Ernst Toch, Hans Vogt and PM Braun (some of his contemporary works are dedicated to him), as well as the works of the Mannheim School (piano concertos by Stamitz and Sterkel), Romanian music (eg George Enesco) and Polish music. Paul Dan was a visiting professor at the "Musashino Academia Musicae" in Tokyo at the age of 29, and since 1978 he has been professor for piano and chamber music at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Mannheim. He was a welcome guest at international festivals, eg. In Pollenca in Spain or Maine / USA. He has also given numerous masterclasses in Europe, USA and Asia. For health reasons, Paul Dan withdrew from the podium in 1992, appeared in chamber music ensembles until 1996 and then left the concert life completely.
