A.k.a. Paul Lustig Dunkel
Paul Dunkel (b. 1943) is an American flutist, conductor, composer, and arranger, music director of the Westchester Philharmonic from 1983 to 2008. He was born in New York in the family of a Viennese pianist Johanna Lustig and Russian scenic designer Eugene Dunkel. Paul studied flute with Robert DiDomenica and William Kincaid. In 1966, Dunkel took the silver medal at the Birmingham International Woodwind Festival in England (James Galway took the gold). As the music director of Westchester, Paul Dunkel developed a reputation for presenting new works and promoting new artists. In honor of his 15th anniversary with the orchestra, Concerto for Flute, Strings, and Percussion by Melinda Wagner was commissioned. This work received a Pulitzer Prize in 1999.
