A.k.a. Peter Nye Kerlin
Peter Kerlin is a composer, bassist, occasional video maker and teacher from Brooklyn. His band, Peter Kerlin Octet ‘s album,Salamander was released on Innova Recordings in Nov 2013, was featured on WNYC’s New Sounds. Host John Schaefer called it ”ambitious”. He is the bass player of Solar Motel Band, led by Chris Forsyth which John Mulvey of Uncut wrote ” I am struggling to think of a band I’d like to see more right now.” With Christy & Emily(KLANGBAD, The Social Registry) Kerlin has toured extensively in Europe and recorded their Album “Tic-Tac-Toe” with Hans-Joachim Irmler(Faust); Kerlin’s trio, Source of Yellow, who’s release The Said(Twin Lakes Records, 2012) garnered praise around the web; and Chris Forsyth’s Paranoid Cat Band, who’s LP, Paranoid Cat(Family Vineyard, 2011) Kerlin engineered. Kerlin’s 2010 album, Snake Eats Electric Blanket, featured and outstanding lineup of intrepid musicians: Chris Forsyth, Mike Pride, Nate Wooley, Emily Manzo, and Chris Peck. Kerlin is a member of the experimental electroacoustic band, Christmas Decorations(Wodger), with whom he has recorded four albums since 2006. He was a longtime member of The Holy Childhood, touring extensively throughout the US from 2000 to 2003. In their LP, Up With What I’m Down With, Greil Marcus described “a cracked vision in this sprawling music”. Kerlin played on Ted Leo’s seminal 2001 album,Tyranny of Distance, which Pitchfork called “one of the best pop albums of the year.” Kerlin worked with, pianist, Emily Manzo creating the soundtrack for the feature film The Rooms(2010), by Paul Rowly and Tim Blue, which showed internationally and was subsequently purchased by The Centre Pompidou. Kerlin’s short film Cenozoan Warp(2011) was shown in a three night run at Henry Street Settlement as part of Catch 45. His collaborative video with his wife, Anna Sperber, Between Scans(2008), was featured in Triple Canopy (Issue 5) and recently was included in their print anthology Invalid Format, Vol 2 (2012). Kerlin’s work in the dance world as composer and video designer has seen collaborations with dance artists: Anna Sperber, Diana Crum, Topiary Samuel, Miguel Gutierrez, Beth Gil and Andrew Dinwiddie; performing at Dance Theater Workshop, Dixson Place, Abrons Art Center/Henry Street Settlement, Danspace Project, Joyce SoHo, and many others.
