The Sacrificial Leaves either existed or they did not exist, or they did not exist for very long in the early ‘80s in Copenhagen. Blurry-eyed youth of the time globally re-focussed through music. We could all gather, turn our attention away from stupidities of the old-guard and revel in shared common cause... and always with friends. Mark Bandola and I met and became fast friends at Lord Beaverbrook Senior High in Calgary during the early 1970s. We loved everything to do with music, spending our weekends exploring and improvising with rented gear in the booming concrete enclave of my father’s sign shop, gladly falling into the music-abyss. Since then our paths have run their separate courses over decades and on different continents and yet we have somehow maintained a friendship, tenuous at times due only to distance. Mark and I both share a fondness for all things Danish. I come by it honestly, having been born in Denmark to Danish parents who shipped our family to Canada when I was 4. In Mark’s, case he was exposed to a rash amount of Danish-ness after repeated visits to my family’s Scandinavian home and I’m afraid it may have permanently affected him. The Sacrificial Leaves were alive at a time when Mark and I both experienced a collision of musical forms. Punk, post-punk, pre-post punk(!), New Wave, experimental jazz, improvisational noise all mixed-up and ready to influence willing minds. Long may it reign.
