Born in Phalaborwa, South Africa and moving to Johannesburg at the age of 16, Petro began deejaying in 1987 under the DJ Static P monicker (on account of his not-easily pronounced surname). Moving through the ranks and various residencies, he established himself as DJ, remixer, producer and mastering engineer in his own right. He is also a qualified MCSE and Sound Engineer, having worked nine years at the SABC. Together with Christos Katsaitis he formed Phat Kat Records in 1995. Sister label Static Plastic was launched in 2000, and the AfrodesiaMP3 platform followed in 2006.
