Along with his pioneering work in the chaotic speed-jamnoise band Hashbrown (think something like Hella only more in line with Chicago and ten years earlier), Phil Taylor has made a name for himself as one of the most creative, intricate and artful guitarists playing today. Phil spent the better part of the past four years touring with his band Volta Do Mar, earning critical acclaim from the likes of Alternative Press and Giant Robot while playing festivals like SxSW and birthday parties alike. When not touring Phil is often hard to find. In 2004 he was bridge jumping in the Pacific Northwest. In 2000 he was hitchhiking and unicycling from Florida to Chicago. In 2004 Phil outscored the nearest rider by almost 100 points to win the Cuttin’ Crew Classic bike messenger race in Chicago, earning an automatic entry into the World Cycle Messenger Championships in Seattle. In 2001 he was working as a bodyguard for a German businessman in Spain. In 2003 he found himself fending off a violent student with a chair while substitute teaching in a Chicago city school. An incident from 2000 explains why Volta Do Mar was largely an instrumental band- Phil ended up in the hospital in intensive care when complications from a botched tooth extraction caused his throat to swell, nearly costing him his vocal chords. It has taken four years for his voice to recover.
