A.k.a. Phil Dawson
Phil Dawson is a guitar player, composer and educator with a wide musical culture, working out of London and internationally. Phil is an established producer and composer, with releases on BMG, Zomba, Sony Music, Warner/Chappell, Family Recordings and De Wolfe Music, amongst others. As an educator, he has taught both instrumental and music technology-based courses at a wide range of levels, currently including BIMM Bristol on the BA in Music Performance. Former students of his have gone on to play with major artists such as Amy Winehouse, Tinchy Stryder and The Streets, as well as sign successful publishing deals internationally. Performances and/or recordings and/or collaborations with Pan-African masters Hugh Masekela (South Africa); Tony Allen (Nigeria); Khaled (Algeria); Mulatu Astatke (Ethiopia); Geraldo Pino (Sierra Leone); Baaba Maal (Senegal), recently played in various formats with Damon Albarn, Martina Topley-Bird, rapper Akala, roots reggae masters Michael Prophet, Johnny Clarke, Earl 16, Mad Professor and Cornell Campbell; also Wunmi, The Heliocentrics, Hypnotic Brass, Ty, Natty; Soul artists Sounds of Blackness, Leroy Burgess, Junior Giscombe, Alexander O'Neal, Charlotte (Soul II Soul), Leee John. Also worked on the recent sellout productions of 'Fela!' both at the National Theatre and Sadlers Wells. Also regular with London based world fusion/roots bands Soothsayers, Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra, Saravah Soul, Atongo Zimba trio, Lokkhi Terra, Creative Force; have also appeared with Brit jazz artists Rowland Sutherland, Ben Davis (Basquiat), Orphy Robinson, Julia Biel, Tony Kofi etc. Have a longstanding involvement with Brazilian music, including musical encounters with Moreno+2, Orquestra Imperial, Ed Motta, Dadi Carvalho (ex Jorge Ben 'Africa Brasil' bassist and Rita Lee's songwriting partner), Artur Maia, Gerson Silva (guitarist and MD for Carlinhos Brown) and others.
