Jam Session

Album IT 1994 on Home Records label
Rock

This was the first of two Phish shows at this venue – a former movie house and performing arts space built in 1926 with a capacity of 3,194. The show took place on the Wednesday after the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. It’s Ice included a tease of Right Off (Miles Davis cover). After Run Like An Antelope, Trey dedicated the song to his friend who was giving birth as the set began. He wished that the baby would go on to live its life “something like that last jam” and joked that the child should be named Marco Esquandolas. Most of set II – You Enjoy Myself, Buried Alive, The Landlady, Julius, Wolfman’s Brother, Magilla, Suzy Greenberg and Caravan – featured the Cosmic Country Horns (dressed in NOLA costumes), who consisted of: Carl “Gears” Gerhard and Michael Ray on trumpets, Dave “The Truth” Grippo on alto sax,Tony Tate on tenor sax, Rick Trolsen on trombone and Jerome Therlot on baritone sax. Like the 4/4/94 and 4/15/94 versions with horns, Wolfman’s Brother sped up into an instrumental Alumni Blues Jam. Suzy Greenberg ended in a fairly Out jam during which Trey “played” a megaphone on his guitar and Mike implemented an electric screwdriver on his bass. After this show the band and crew traveled 360 miles to Houston for a day off. Coincidentally, Trey debuted his supergroup Oysterhead in New Orleans at another downtown theater exactly 6 years from this show.
