Piero Heliczer was an underground poet and filmmaker, with his friend Angus MacLise he started the Dead Language Press in 1958 to publish their poetry. He lived in various locations throughout the world, his most well known period is when he was in New York City in the early 60's, during this time he collaborated with and appeared in films by Jack Smith and Andy Warhol. In 1965, Walter Cronkite's crew came to his apartment to a TV feature on the filming of an undergound film, which basically ended up being Piero filming and then joining in with his roommate's band, Velvet Underground. other people who appeared in his films included La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela, Mario Montez, Gerard Malanga, Ira Cohen, Tuli Kupferberg, and of course Angus MacLise. Though his material has remained scarce, Granary Books published a anthology of his poetry in 2001. Piere Heliczer was born in 1937 in Italy and died in Preaux du Perche, France in 1993.
