Enslaved man from St. Martinville, Louisiana, he lived before the American civil war (1861–1865). David Greely, formerly of Steve Riley & The Mamou Playboys, found his poems in an old book called "Louisiana Creole Dialect", by Dr. James Broussard, great-uncle of another The Mamou Playboys member, Sam Broussard.
