Prosper van Eechaute (born Ghent, August 8, 1904, died Ghent, June 26, 1964) displayed considerable talent even as a young man. A brilliant student, he then won the Prix de Rome in 1933, becoming the Director of the Municipal Conservatoire in 1938 and later Professor of Counterpoint and Fugue at the Royal Conservatoire in the city of his birth. From that time onwards his teaching eclipsed his composing.
