Rögnvaldur Sigurjónsson. 15. Oct 1918 - 28. Feb 2004 / Icelandic Pianist. Rögnvaldur Sigurjónsson was born in Eskifjörður on October 15th 1918. He began his studies at The Reykjavik Music Academy in 1931. He finished his solo performers examination in the spring of 1937. Rögnvaldur held his first public concert October 6th 1937. Then he went to Paris and studied with famous French pianist Marcel Ciampi in 1937-1939. When World War II broke out, he went back to Iceland but in 1942 he moved to New York and studied with pianist Sascha Gorodnitski, who had been one of Josephs Lhevinne prize pupils. Rögnvaldur studied with Gorodnitski till 1945. When he finished his studies he held a concert in Washington D.C. which was a great success and the critics raved about his performance. Rögnvaldur then moved back to Iceland with his family and became a teacher at is old school, The Reykjavik Music Academy. He had become head teacher of the advanced department of the school when he retired due to old age. He has continued teaching intermittently and thus has continued to share his knowledge and experience with young people.
