American music critic and author, Born in Newton Center, Mass1903 - Died in Kingston, N.Y. 1988; He was one of the first American critics to concentrate primarily on recordings, founder of the magazines Phonograph Monthly Review and Music Lovers' Guide. His primary interest was the classics, which he reviewed for numerous publications including Saturday Review, High Fidelity (where he was a columnist from 1954 through 1987) and most recently, Opus. The author of several reference books on music and recordings.
