Ralph Mayo was born on January 4, 1930 in Hawkins County, TN. He is best known for his work with the Stanley Brothers (Mayo first began working for the Stanley Brothers by substituting for Chubby Anthony for their second Mercury session in 1953; he played off and on with the brothers through 1965). Mayo began his professional career with the Bailey Brothers in 1947. He then went on to fiddle for Carl Sauceman and Mac Wiseman before co-leading the Southern Mountain Boys with L.C. Smith. Mayo died on September 20, 1992. He is buried at Oak Hill Memorial Park in Kingsport, TN.
