Album US 1983 on Prescription Records label
Jazz, Folk, World and (Avant-garde Jazz, Free Jazz, Fusion, Modal)
This is one gorgeous album! Bassist/cellist McLean and reedman Dagradi have realized a series of duets that blend in harmonious empathy, delicate balance and mature economy of thought (and forethought). These men are virtuosi on the highest plane; they can and know when to play one note perfectly. The duet in jazz was once a rare and special occurence. The seventies saw it rise to new plateaus of excellence and become a viable improvisational avenue. This album illustrates the essence of the duet performance; intelligent dialogues with form, real interchange and the achievement of a sound wherein the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. McLean and Dagradi are products of a unique colony known as New Orleans, a humid, sensual, mixed, funky, lyrical culture that seems to inspire life and music of unclassifiable eclecticism and beauty. Both of these men have performed with national figures (Dagradi with Carla Bley and McLean with Sam Rivers, for example), and they are also strong and prolific forces on the crescent city scene, playing and composing with a variety of challenging ensembles. These two artists are among a strong community of talented people that include Ellis Marsalis, Alvin Batiste, Earl Turbinton, 'Kidd' Jordan, Alvin Fielder, Charles Neville, James Black, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and others. It is music that must be heard. Perhaps this album is the first step to getting all of that great music out to the world. This music speaks of beauty, grace, guts, form and true harmony.
