Legendary bass player Chris Bailey (Headband, The Angels, GangGajang) was boarding at Prince Alfred College in Adelaide, when he met singer, guitarist and poet Rob Tillett in 1966. They shared a room and Rob taught Chris how to play the bass guitar. "Tattered Sole" came of this, which included Rob Tillett, lead guitar and vocals, Chris Bailey, bass and vocals, Jim Ashby, rhythm and vocals, Rick Frolich, lead vocals, and Bob Wiltshire on drums. When school ended, the band reformed, featuring Rob Tillett, lead guitar and vocals, Chris Bailey, bass and vocals, Robert "Jakes" Jacobs, rhythm, Richard Tipping, lead vocals, and John Freeman on drums and vocals (Levi Smith Clefs, Fraternity, Some Dream, Micky Finn). By mid 1968, Richard Tipping left the band which was reformed as Red Angel Panic, featurning Rob Tillett, lead guitar/vocals, Chris Bailey, bass/vocals, John Freeman, drums/vocals, Robert Jacobs, rhythm, and Ken Skinner, keyboards. The band formed to provide music for dance drama "Rites Underground", directed by Doug Anders. The Panic regularly performed at anti-Vietnam War rallies, universities, clubs and schools., providing the music for another Anders production, "Viet Rock" in 1969. 1970 saw Rob and Chris remaining in the band with new keyboard player, Moses Carmen and drummer, Peter MacCormack and a single, 'Viet Rock', 1971 on Nationwide label. A second single 'Good Old Rock n Roll' was released in 1972 on Nationwide, with Lee Cass on drums and Ron Anderson on bass. After a motor accident severly injured Rob's hand, The Panic broke up, but was reformed in 1976 with Chris Bailey back on bass, Rob Tillett, vocals/guitar, Mick Jurd (Fraternity) lead guitar, Russ Johnson and Graham Davidge on guitar, John Freeman, drums. Freeman was replaced by Graham "Buzz" Bidstrip (The Angels) on drums and JJ Hackett (Stars), guitar, percussion. An excellent album was recorded with this lineup, but is so far unreleased. The Panic finally broke up in 1977, although later unreleased recordings were made with Tillett, Bailey, Bidstrup and Clive Shakespeare.
