Born in Yokohama in 1976, Munakata currently resides in Stockholm, Sweden. Rei studied with Ole Lüztow Holm at Högskolan för musik och scen vid Göteborgs Universitet, Sweden. In 2010 Munakata received the second prize award for Pouring Etiquette (2009) from Via Nova composition competition and the work was performed by Ensemble Marges during XI. Weimarer Frühjahrstage für zeitgenössische Musik, Weimar. The work is also selected as one of the winning compositions for the 2011 SoundON Festival of Modern Music in San Diego, and will be performed by NOISE. Sweeping Buddhist (2008) for ensemble was selected to Ensemble 2010 project during Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt Summer Course 2010, and was performed by Ensemble Modelo62 Den Haag.
