Best-selling South African author, journalist, documentarian and songwriter of Afrikaner descent born 1954 in Johannesburg. The bulk of his work deals with South African society in a historical and contemporary perspective and focuses on racial relations. As a journalist, he has written for major newspapers in South Africa, Great Britain and the USA. A driving force behind the Radio Kalahari Orkes, Rian is also a self-taught musician who performs with a gypsy jazz band called Hot Club d'Afrique.
