American photographer from Providence, Rhode Island, he was a US Army Photographer in 1964-65. In 1971 he founded an early alternative newspaper in RI called “The Point” which covered the local and national cultural issues of the time. A significant part of the paper was devoted to art and music, which inspired the start of Richard’s career as a photographer in the music industry. Richard moved to the San Francisco Bay area in 1973. During the 70s & 80s he freelanced for magazines such as Rolling Stone, Billboard, Guitar Player and many other publications. He was Chief Photographer for BAM, The California Music Magazine, from 1975-1986 and also worked with concert promoters, bands and record companies. He co-published his first book “X-capees” a San Francisco Punk Rock Documentary with F-stop Fitzgerald and Ray Santos in 1980. Richard returned to Rhode Island in 1991 where he became the staff photographer for The Providence Phoenix until 2014, he is now a contributor to Motif Magazine and Go Local Prov.
