As the founder of two of dance music's best-known record labels, Rob Di Stefano is the man responsible for some of 90's House Music's most important artists and songs. In 1991, he created the independent labels TRIBAL America / TRIBAL United Kingdom Records. Within five years, TRIBAL grew to be the genre's most respected underground imprint. As label president / head of A&R (and as U.S. managing director of William Orbit's Guerilla Records, distributed by Tribal in the U.S.), Di Stefano found and developed many of the biggest names in contemporary dance music. Danny Tenaglia, Deep Dish, Junior Vasquez, Murk, Tom Stephen, Underground Sound of Lisbon and others began their careers with Di Stefano or watched them grow under his guidance and direction. TRIBAL closed in early 1996 when Di Stefano left parent company IRS Records (who, without TRIBAL’s income, went out of business months after Di Stefano’s departure). In August that same year, Rob formed TWISTED Records, a new label built from the remains of his former imprint and launched it with the hit “Fired Up!”. The entire TRIBAL artist roster and label staff moved to TWISTED, a joint-venture with Universal/MCA, where Di Stefano continued to build a trademark brand name and very successful artists (Funky Green Dogs, Club 69, Celeda).
