Born in Baltimore, educated at John's Hopkins University, has a varied career as a WWII soldier and member of the American Diplomatics Corps, a ballet dancer and manager of a cuckoo clock factory before setting into his permanent career as a seller of rare books. His definitive bibliography of the published works of Gertrude Stein earned him recognition as one of the leading authorities on Stein. Knopf published his book "Modern Book Collecting".
