Musician / Composer of Jazz and Classical
Percussionist, educator, composer. Robert joined the Northern Illinois University (NIU) School of Music faculty in 1983 as Head of Percussion Studies. His formal education includes degrees from Ohio State University and the University of North Texas where he toured and recorded with the renowned One O'Clock Lab Band. In the jazz/world music area, Chappell was keyboardist/percussionist with the Paul Winter Consort for five years. He formed his own world-jazz group Rhythmic Union, recording two albums and touring extensively. Since 1998 he has performed with steelpan artist Liam Teague in Liam Teague + Robert Chappell. Teague and Chappell recently formed a six-piece Latin/Caribbean group, Panoramic. Robert has composed works for contemporary percussion, jazz groups, and cross-cultural ensembles.
