Born in Berlin, Germany on May 15, 1931. Rutman was educated in England and emigrated to the U.S. in 1951. Between 1958 and 1962 he lived in Mexico. After this he opened the "A Fly Can't Bird But a Bird Can Fly" gallery in Greenwich Village. In 1970 he moved to Maine and founded the Central Maine Power Music Company. Later he relocated to Cambridge, Massachusetts where he founded the U.S. Steel Cello Ensemble. Currently living in Berlin and still performing.
