Roland Hayes (1887-1977) is considered the first African-American male concert artist to achieve wide acclaim both in the United States and internationally. This groundbreaking double LP from Vanguard records has a unique format. Side 1 of each album features Roland Hayes singing from the classical repertoire: Telemann, Bach, Beethoven, Berlioz, etc. Side 2 consists of "Aframerican religious and work songs": spirituals and folks songs arranged by Hayes himself. Reginald Boardman accompanies on the piano.
