A.k.a. Kenneth Wright
Romance was born on May 31, 1964 in Honolulu, Hawaii and grew up on the west side of Chicago, Illinois. At ten years of age he began to display a strong interest in making music with his mother’s pots and pans in the attempt to imitate drums. That same year his father brought him a toy drum set and congas for Christmas and he quickly began learning the rhythms to popular songs on the radio. He became skilled with various percussion instruments and discovered a natural ability to play along with radio tunes to perfection. During high school he was asked to join a gospel choir as their Bass guitarist and began learning how voices were arranged to form harmonies. Exposure to other vocalists and musicians in high school earned him a reputation as someone who was talented in performing multiple instruments including: trumpet, piano, organ, drums, Bass & Lead guitar, synthesizer, keyboards, bongos, congas, percussion, and more. While attending high school Romance formed a band called 'Romance and the Love Club' with his brother James Wright playing (guitar, vocals) Derrick Williams (drums, vocals) Steve Braylock (Bass guitar, vocals) Dorothy Benson (keyboard, vocals) Michael Johnson (vocals, percussion) Keith Kelly (vocals, percussion, flute) Debra Allen (vocals) Tracey Scott (vocals) Tiffany Cato (vocals) with Romance on (vocals, Bass guitar, keyboard) and became local celebrities in Chicago and ultimately attracted the attention and support of politicians and community organizers who secured performing engagements for the band throughout the city. Romance joined the choir at First Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, working with his cousin Gospel Music great - Angela Spivey and began receiving invitations to perform engagements that earned him payment for his talent. He was actively involved in the 'House Music' scene in Chicago and signed his first recording contract with DJ International Records (1986) where he composed, arranged, produced and performed the classic, Deep-House global hit song ‘All Dis Music’ *When last researched, ‘All Dis Music’ had generated 9,368,308 online views and was downloaded 2,274,858 times worldwide. Following a successful career in Chicago, he decided to relocate to Los Angeles, California in 1987 and with Business partner ‘Mikel Hooks’ formed the independent recording label - Slam City Records in 1989. Romance began meeting and working with upcoming talent and legendary artists - Dr. Dre, Warren G., Ice Cube, Eazy E, Dwayne McGhee, Ice T, Snoop Doggy Dog, Stevie Wonder, LL Cool J, Miki Howard, Tone Loc, Teddy Wilson, Barry White, Angel 11:11, Joey Rebel, Prince, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Morris Day, Bobby Brown, Heavy D, Tupac, and Polo. While producing music and directing videos Romance gathered extensive experience on how to scout, sign, develop, and market new music talent. He worked during the day as a Regional Marketing representative for Cher, Dolly Parton, Kenny G, Yanni and Barbra Streisand. He also performed live music gigs at night throughout Southern California. Romance co-founded a Multimedia company in 2011 globally known as ‘The ArtWak Empire’. Realizing it would benefit and reward his career goals, Romance enrolled at Houston Community College in 2014 with a major in Business Management/Business Law & Survey of the Music Business, taught by Professor Marc Garvin. *Plans for a United Kingdom music tour are imminent. “My mission in life is to motivate and inspire the dreams of people through original music, multimedia, and technology with an emphasis on the needs of people”.
