Guitar, Jazz - Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Awards: 2008 Music Pioneer Award, African Nova Scotian Music Association 2003 Jazz Artist of the Year, African Nova Scotian Music Association Ross Anderson - a Canadian East Coast Musician whose approach to traditional jazz guitar and flair for contemporary musical styling have won him accolades from his peers. His solid rhythm arrangements and distinct solos demonstrate a unique blend of technique and melody, making him an explosive talent steadily gaining wide appeal. A native Nova Scotian, Ross’s exposure to the guitar came at age ten. Heavily influenced by Gospel and R&B, Ross became equally popular for his solid rhythm arrangements as he was for his creative solos. Jazz exposure came later; a period when he had no real appreciation for jazz and couldn’t grasp a true appreciation for what he would hear. Ross’s study for music was thru his attendance at Jazz Studies Program at the Humber College in Toronto and the Summer Guitar Session Program at the Berklee College of Music in Boston as well as private study with jazz guitarist Ritchie Hart of New York. Ross credits George Benson as the single most major influence in his career as a jazz guitarist. Ross has performed at the Atlantic Jazz Festival in Halifax, with jazz pianist Joe Sealy, Jackie Richardson and Dutch Robinson. He has also had the opportunity to perform with Cissy Houston and the Winans and played an integral part of the band representing Halifax in the Vision TV Program Gospel Challenge and was lead guitarist in the Black Theatrical version of Gospel at Colonus. He has recorded as a session musician for both CBC Radio and Television backing such locarl artists as Linda Carvery, the Nova Scotia Mass Choir and Jeremiah Sparks. Anderson’s push to develop and excel at his art continues as he builds a library of original works that should further showcase his rare ability to display dynamic range, power and emotion through is guitar.
