Band, DE
Photo taken from Craig Bobby's Ohio-area metal zine The Iron Planet. The single, due to the extreme obscurity of the band, was mistaken to be a single from the American band (formed in Germany) Sabre, under the mistaken pretense that this band was from California. "City Of Flames" was even bootlegged on "U.S. Metal - Heavy Metal Obscurities - The Vinyl Years" and credited to the wrong band. Formed in April 1983 by Pat Hayes & Rick Constantinescu. In early 1984 they recruited singer Eric Reeves (who was known locally by his stage name "Buddy McCormack" but who again started using his birth name, Eric Reeves, when joining Sabre). Eric had left Shok Paris after recording one song with them, released on the "Cleveland Metal" LP (Clubside Records, 1983), and quickly joined Byson . After 7-8 months with Byson he left them, and joined Sabre. Shortly after Reeves joined Sabre they split from original drummer Rick Keihl and recruited (ex-Fayrewether) drummer Pete Pollack. With this new lineup Sabre quickly became a highly regarded local band, playing many successful shows around Ohio, alongside Rogue, Final Notice, Matrixx, and even numerous co-headlining shows with Shok Paris such as the ones at The Old Brooklyn Tavern (with Icon) on July 24, 1984 and at Cheeter's on December 22, 1984. Their activity was also carefully followed by Craig Bobby's local Metal zine The Iron Planet, which reported the lineup changes, posted ads for upcoming shows, published reviews of their live shows, and even did a full page feature on the band that outlined their history, included quotes from members on their influences and goals, discussed their current catalog of material, and first announced the upcoming single. It is also the source of 2 photos of the band, now the only ones available on the internet. In November 1984 they went Suma Recording Studio in Painesville, Ohio to record their debut demo, a 6 song tape, which was released before the end of 84 in extremely small quantities. This was followed in March 1985 by a 7" single with 2 of the songs from the tape. This 7" was sold in only one location in town, Chris's Warped Records (Cleveland). A couple months after the release of the 7" single, Reeves left Sabre and relocated to Pheonix, Arizona. Sabre relocated soon after, to Hollywood, California. After a little over a year of the bands time in California, still unable to find a qualified and capable replacement for Reeves in the local scene, Pat Hayes put the band to rest and moved back to Northeast Ohio a few years after the breakup. While Hayes moved back to Ohio, the Constantinescu brothers stayed in California to pursue music careers there. After Eric Reeves left Byson to join Sabre in late 1983, they continued on with different singers and lineups until 1989-1990 and never did any known studio recordings. Some of their songs with Eric included "Evil Warriors", "Forced Entry", "Watch For The Byson" and "Shock of the Night". 1985 Eric relocated to Pheonix, Arizona and became part of the local music scene there, fronting the band Mirror Mirror in the late 80s and early 90's and releasing their debut 2-song demo in 1991. He continued singing until 2001, and since then he has been active as a drummer and currently plays with Direct Hit. Pat Hayes stayed back in Ohio since his return in the early 90s. Rick Keihl co-founded the band Abduction with Bob Allerton and Joe Kilcoyne in 1983, before he and Allerton were recruited to join Firedance (soon changing their name to Rotterdam) and brought much of their Abduction material with them. By 1987 Rick had split from Rotterdam and soon joined back with Kilcoyne in the beginning of The Spudmonsters. In 2011 Paul Constantinescu was arrested in Hollywood for kidnapping 24-year-old aspiring actress Satara Stratton and holding her captive for 10 months (since 2010). The kidnapping and the search for the missing actress was featured in an episode of Investigation Discovery's nationwide show Disappeared, and in 2011 Constantinescu released her by dropping her at a local Emergency Room, and was arrested shortly after. Rick Constantinescu owned Hollywood Rubber Stamp Company in California until his brothers arrest when he re-located to Tennessee and started a new business.
