Album Notes Raga Bilaskhani-Tori Raga Bilaskhani-Tori was created by Bilas Khan, the son of Tan Sen, who was India's greatest musician during the 16th and early 17th centuries. One morning soon after Tan Sen's death, Bilas Khan went to his father's grave to sing. His intention was probably to sing Bhairavi, a morning raga which conveys a mood of sadness and bereavement, but as he became more and more deeply immersed in the music he began to introduce elements of Tori, another morning raga that conveys a profound and dignified melancholy. The two ragas combined to produce a third, both sad and stately, mournful and contemplative, and very beautiful. Raga Rage Shree Raga Rage Shree is an evening raga meant to be sung before midnight. The mood is one of a contemplative and introspective sadness. The text is devotional, with the worshipper addressing his heart, telling it that Rama - God - is omnipotent and above all attractions and desires, and advising his heart to remember Rama and recite his name. Raga Chandra Kauns Raga Chandra Kauns is also an evening raga, and expresses a mood of fulfillment and joyfulness. The text of the composition is taken from the story of Krishna and Radha, his lover. Radha addresses her beloved, at once complaining of his inattention and extoling his beauty. These three ragas together make a complete cycle of the spectrum of emotions - from sadness and loss to joy and fulfillment.
