SANS formed in 2011 as the quartet of multi-instrumentalist Andrew Cronshaw, the great Finnish singer Sanna Kurki-Suonio, multi-instrumental reeds player Ian Blake (2), and Armenian duduk master Tigran Aleksanyan. They'd all appeared on Andrew Cronshaw's 9th solo album "The Unbroken Surface of Snow" (Cloud Valley, 2011). In 2014 came the first SANS CD, "SANS LIve", recorded on a tour in Flanders. In 2018 came their first studio album, "Kulku" (Cloud Valley, 2018), in the course of which Erika Hammarberg joined the group as co-vocalist.
