Sonja Tallis was born in Sydney of Greek and Norwegian parents in 1945. She learned piano and violin, sang in her school choir and a madrigal group. Her first folk group was the Folkway Trio with Bill Sandy and Les Miller. When that group disbanded she teamed with Sean Cullip in September 1963 to form Sean & Sonja. Sean Cullip was lead tenor and leader of a school choir, took part in a Barber Shop quartet and had his own folk group. He studied piano for two years and became resident pianist with the school orchestra. He later taught himself guitar. The duo played regularly at The Troubadour in Sydney from May 1964. They signed a contract with CBS Records in November 1964. They played alongside the New Lost City Ramblers during their tour of Australia in 1965. Their debut self titled LP came out in March the same year. It was followed in July by A Very Good Year, and then their third LP Sometime Lovin'.
