Compil. US 2000 on Conquer The World Records label
Rock (Indie Rock, Acoustic)
Release either in late 2000 or early 2001. "The Atavan Tapes" is partly an album, partly a compilation. It is technically a compilation of select songs from various recordings sessions at several studios and from Sean's own 6-track tape recorder. The quality of recording varies from song to song. However, this release served as Sean Hoen's debut solo album and was promoted as such, though the press release made it clear that it compiled different things. Press release: "During the year 2000, following personal tragedy and the disbandment of his group Thoughts Of Ionesco, Sean Hoen sold his amplifiers and recorded several acoustic demos on a 6-track that accompanied him in various living spaces. "The Atavan Tapes" is an 11-song collection of those sketch tapes, three of which were recorded at Woodshed Studios and feature his former bandmates Nathan Miller and Brian Repa. Sean currently resides in East Lansing, Michigan where he studies psychology at the master's level and is writing new material for an as-of-yet unnamed music project. "The Atavan Tapes" A collection of home and studio recordings. Sean M. Hoen's debut cd of home recordings will find little place in the fickle genre of the American singer-songwriter. Rather, "Atavan" is an album capable of standing on it's own as a unique document that bears little resemblance to acoustic artists of the past or present. On these 6-track recordings, Hoen controls more power than most five-piece bands, wrangling melody from shifty jazz-folk chords and a voice that rasps with pained (occasionally drunken) emotion. When joined by his band, the atmosphere thickens and the weight increases. There's a balance of beauty and misery in each of the album's 11 tracks. A songwriter for the honest and glamorless, these early tapes are a stunning glimpse of what's to come from this young man-without-a-scene."
