Born March 2, 1955 as Chizuo Matsumoto (松本智津夫). Changed his name in 1987. Founder and leader of the Aum Shinrikyo cult. He has been imprisoned since May 1995 for his role in the Tokyo subway sarin gas attacks and was sentenced to die by hanging on February 27, 2004. Asahara was executed by hanging on July 6, 2018, at the Tokyo Detention House 23 years after the sarin gas attack.
