Recorded at Lunapark Tonstudios, Berlin, November 1991 On Auguries of Speed, Sibylle Pomorin and Terry Jenoure present a colorful tribute to beat poet Anne Waldman. Jenoure renders the eight of Waldman's poems in a voice that shifts from straight singing to recitation to incantation. These are posed over a shifting patterns of color which draws on funk and free jazz in equal measures. The settings -- half by Pomorin, half by Jenoure -- always reflect the moods of the poems. "Song" speaks of the wildness of freedom over a skittering funk pattern."To Hummingbird" is a surreal lyrical ballad. Solos, especially the acid rock spots by guitarist Christy Doran and Pomorin's free jazz wailing, offer pungent commentary on the poems. But the emphasis is really on the ensemble which at times sounds like an avant-garde Dixieland band with trumpeter Herb Robertson laying out searing lead lines and trombonist Annie Whitehead tailgating into the next millennium.
