Folk (Folk)
Side A is devoted to the music of the Indians who live along the Upper Xingu, an important right-bank tributary of the Amazon. The Xingu is formed by the junction of five major rivers whose network constitutes a triangular basin situated to the north of the Mato Grosso highlands, bordering upon the great Amazonian forest. Today this vast region is inhabited by no more than a few hundered Indians belonging to the Tupi, Arawak and Carib linguistic stock and to an isolated group, the Trumaï. In spite of enduring linguistic differencies, cultural unity has been achieved among the "Xinguanos" as appears in body decoration and ornamentation, in the techniques, in the musical instruments and in certain institutions. The recordings collected among the Cayapo and the Caingang have been grouped on side B; on track 4, we added a recording made among the Yaulapiti of the Upper Xingu. The Cayapo belong to the Ge linguistic stock to which the Caingang are also distantly related. Today the whole of Central Brazil lies between them. The Cayapo, still living as semi-nomads, roam the savannas of the Middle Xingu, while the Caingang have settled on reservations established by S.P.I. in the southern states of Sao Paulo, Parana and Santa Catarina. Catalog number "LVLX - 194" on labels, "LVLX 194" and "LVLX. 194" on backsleeve
