A.k.a. Charles Jennings "Sonny" Mead Jr
Multiple-time Virginia state fiddler champion and a founder of the Virginia Bluegrass & Country Music Association, died Sept. 25, 2011 at age 81. Sonny Mead started liking the violin as a youngster when he visited his maternal grandfather in Richmond and heard him play it. His parents were giving him classical violin lessons by the time he was 5 or 6, said his former wife, Patricia Wiltshire Mead of Mechanicsville. Interested in many kinds of music, he began to play country and bluegrass music with his friends as he got older. He would enter fiddlers’ contests and more often than not would return home with a prize. Played the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, recorded with various bands, taught violin and helped found the Virginia Bluegrass & Country Music Foundation. Dubbed “Sonny Boy” early on by his mother, the name stuck, and the Chase City native went through life as “Sonny.” Over the years, he played with many bands, including George Winn and The Bluegrass Partners, the Cripple Creek Boys and Heights of Grass. Mr. Mead made his radio debut on the Frank Porter Show on WLEE Radio in Richmond. (see link below)
