The Soweto String Quartet was formed in 1989 at the Madimba School of Music around the nucleus of Sandile Khamese (first violin), Thami Khamese (second violin and youngest brother), cellist Reuben Khamese (eldest brother), and childhood friend Makhosini Mnguni on viola. Debut CD "Zebra Crossing" was released by BMG in 1994 and picked up three prizes at the first South African Music Awards. 1996's follow-up, "Renaissance", claimed another two SAMAs.
