(Hard Core Apple CD review) "Rock n Roll All the Way From Mars". Well-remembered in the 70s for tough, high-energy anti-disco party rock injected with naughty bits and crazy stage antics, the band likes its music loud and hard, delivering the goods with pure, unadulterated bar-room rock & roll – straight up, no chaser. For years, Sparkling Apple were hardy touring perennials on a succession of gruelling road trips, playing high schools, bars and nightclubs everywhere from Terrace to Toronto, following their philosophy of "taking the music to the people". In 1979, frustrated by the indifference of established record labels, the band made their most prominent move by becoming the founding group for their own label, RadioActive Records. From then on, Sparkling Apple releases included two singles (I'm Only Here For the Beer, It's Criminal), two EPs (Little Bit, If You Could See Me Now), all of which received Vancouver radio play, and even two cuts on the very first Vancouver Seeds album (now out of print and highly-collectible). After a successful run with five different bass players, the band retired in 1993, but sleepily emerged from hibernation after twenty years. The band reunited and is currently gigging with the last official lineup, featuring Art the Fart the Heavy Metal Kid, Captain Maniac and bassist Kevin Stuart Swain. Drawing on an extensive back catalog and live recordings, Sparkling Apple has released what is technically their debut CD (their early tracks were released on vinyl, as CDs hadn't been invented yet), namely "Hard Core Apple", a compilation of remastered hits, four recently-unearthed live recordings, and two brand new and newly-recorded 2012 tracks written by Kevin Stuart Swain. From their catchy 1980 hit single "It's Criminal" to the bone-crunching smash hit "Midlife Crisis" and the certifiably unstable "Crazy For Your Love" (2012), the CD covers all points in between masterfully, top heavy with exuberant rockers and NO ballads. Every officially-released Sparkling Apple track is here, including the first Sparkling Apple single, "I'm Only Here For the Beer" (and Mott-the-Hoople soundalike "Good Time Girl") as well as choice tracks from the very rare EPs found on Ebay at extortionate prices. "Midnight Flight", one of the songs from the premier C-FOX Seeds album, is also containted herein, although the Star Wars sound effects found on the original album were by necessity edited out, due to licensing restrictions. As an added bonus, the band has also added four previously unreleased live original tunes to this disc, featuring inebriated musicians recorded under combat conditions! This recording of rock & roll lifers is a must-have for the band's friends and fans, known collectively as The Apple Corps, who have loyally supported Sparkling Apple all these years. For everyone else (you know who you are), thanks for nothing! Play this album REAL LOUD!
