Musician of Dance, Electronic and Rock
A.k.a. Dan Abatemarco
Blending chaotic harsh-noise textures with furious breakcore rhythms has become a goal, a calling card, and ultimately a mantra for Speak Onion, the somewhat mysterious moniker of Dan Abatemarco, beat-maker, bassist, noisician and incarcerated garbageman-poet from Woodside, Queens. Speak Onion’s love/hate relationship with the break-beats manifests itself as decidedly break-y music, but with the beats abusively processed beyond recognition and drowning in gobs of feedback and noise. Underneath the miasma the beats and noise are plodding basslines that relentlessly remind the subwoofers who’s boss. This haphazard aesthetic leaves Speak Onion floating somewhere between the worlds of noise music, electronic, and experimental music, with listeners not sure whether to dance, mosh, or stand still listening with rapt attention. Either way is fine.
