Stanley Melvin Berenstain (b. Sep. 29, 1923; d. Nov. 26, 2005) and Janice Marian Grant (b. July 26, 1923; d. Feb. 24, 2012) met in 1941 in Philadelphia and wed following Stan's return from service in World War II. They worked as a team of magazine cartoonists. After beginning a family of their own, they created their first children's book featuring The Berenstain Bears, published and edited by Dr. Seuss. They went on to write and illustrate hundreds of books, and the bear family have had their own animated television programs. Following Stan and Jan's deaths, one of their sons helps carry on the franchise.
