In 1985 Toni Halliday and multi-instrumentalist Dean Garcia formed State of Play together with Julie Fletcher and Eurythmics drummer Olle Romö. In 1986 State of Play released an LP on Virgin Records - a non-hit album that spawned two non-hit singles: "Natural Colour" and "Rock-a-bye Baby". A year and £100,000 in debt later, the band split up. Garcia married Julie Fletcher and moved to Spain. In December of 1989, Garcia returned from Spain and found that Halliday was trying to contact him. Amid the bliss of their reunion, they conceived Curve. They agreed that State of Play's main problems were an "open" budget, an excessive tendency to waste time, and too many outside influences.
