Long-running trumpeter, born 1935 in Sophiatown, Johannesburg, South Africa. A founding member of the African Jazz Pioneers, Stompie was also a regular guest for Pacific Express and numerous other jazz ensembles. It was he who taught Hugh Masekela to play the trumpet, with his son Gershon Manana having followed in his footsteps.
