Te Kanawa Haereiti (aka Rufus) began playing music as a Polynesian percussionist in Las Vegas. He spent a lot of his childhood playing Toere (Tahitian) and Ipu Heke (Hawaiian) for dancers. When I he was about 4 or 5, he met a big band jazz drummer named William Doyle. Doyle was interested in Polynesian percussion and so they spent a few weekends trading styles. Te Kanawa Haereiti plays drums with Groundation since summer 2008.
