Pop, Folk and World
Formed in 1952 Sentinel, Oklahoma, the Teen Angels were originally a quartet of fifth grade girls taught by one of the member's mothers, Helene Jayroe, who encouraged them to sing harmony by ear and a capella. By junior high, Helene's daughter, Judy, would sit at the piano and compose 4-part harmonies for the Teen Angels. Three members of the original quartet continued through through high school: Pat Walker, Sandra Self, and Judy Jayroe. At various times throughout high school, the fourth position was filled by Beverly Cooper, Judy Sanderlin, or Julia Cooper. The Teen Angels performed popular songs in four-part harmony for local groups and organizations weekly, singing often for the Rotary Club. While traveling throughout Oklahoma to sing for a variety of events, the group won a music contest their senior year and were offered scholarships by Oklahoma State University to be the featured female performers on the OSU Men's Glee Club that traveled extensively. At only 17 years old, the Teen Angels had to forgo the opportunity as one member was getting married and the others did soon after. The quartet disbanded after High School graduation, but the local Rotary Club, as a sign of their appreciation, raised funds for the Teen Angels to record a 7-inch single. The result was "As I Dream My Life Away", a song in four-part harmony composed by the group. The recording was #1 in Muleshoe, Texas, where one of the Teen Angels uncle was a local radio DJ.
